Welcome to the fifth edition of SIMalliance Quarterly Newsletter! - March 2012
Dear Colleague,

Barely a day goes by now without security, interoperability and mobility making headlines.

At Mobile World Congress and Cebit, vehicle manufacturers and apps developers showcased new M2M-enabled mobility services, while mobile health (and connected issues of smartphone security) raised temperatures on the conference floors.
Away from the show, few could have failed to notice the appearance and, the growing enthusiasm for LTE enabled tablets or new NFC-enabled ‘mobile keys’ being showcased in connected homes.

There’s so much going on in our space that it can be a challenge keeping up.

To help, you can find a real-time news feed on the SIMalliance homepage and join us for a series of webinars that will be running throughout the year.. Our next session focuses on NFC and the critical need to assure transactional security.

For those of you who prefer to meet face-to-face, we are approaching our inaugural SIMposium USA in May 2012, and of course ramping up for our SIMposium Global and SIMposium Asia events later in the year. We’re also supporting and attending a host of other events across the world, and you can find all the details in this newsletter.

But that’s not all. SIMalliance is respected across the industry for its recommendations, specification documents and its tools. In 2012, we will be launching new ones and adding to our growing portfolio of industry resources.

There is a huge amount going on, so watch this space!

As always, we are keen to hear your comments and questions. Please email us at marketing@simalliance.org.

Best regards
Frédéric Vasnier
Chairman of the Board - SIMalliance

Dear Colleague,

We couldn’t have picked a better week to host our security and interoperability for NFC webinar.
Register for Webinar here.

First Everything Everywhere, Telefónica UK and Vodafone UK announced a joint venture to drive the adoption of m-commerce. The partners will develop the technology to enable consumers to transfer their entire physical wallet into a new secure, SIM-based wallet – irrespective of NFC enabled mobile device, or mobile network.

The news caused some analysts to predict that “by next year, everybody could potentially be using their ‘digital wallet’ to pay for their goods and services.”

This concept of service interoperability and cross-industry partnership is also the central theme of this quarter’s newsletter, albeit from a machine to machine (M2M) perspective.

Dear Colleague,

Type Mobile Identity into a search engine and you won’t be too surprised to see a new virus, malware or similar app attack making headlines.
That’s the curse of today’s IP enabled mobile market: there’s always something bad to talk about. But equally, where there’s a problem, there’s very often a solution.

And that’s exactly the discussion we’ll be having in this quarter’s newsletter. We’ll be talking identity and security in The Interview with Futuretext’s Ajit Jaokar, looking at the challenges and opportunities for the ecosystem.  >>

Dear Colleague,

A lot can happen in one week!

This week we chose to remind the industry of the importance of the SIM card, not only for the user’s freedom of choice and security but also for operators who want to retain control of their network access and usage.

This announcement was followed by a plethora of press coverage, including an article from Mobile Europe's editor Keith Dyer that perfectly summarized the situation.

Dear Colleague,

Whether pioneering new forms of m-payment, supporting moves into the Cloud or defining (and refining) new interoperability standards, the SIMalliance, its working groups and its members continue to push the boundaries of what’s possible, what makes commercial sense and critically, what’s next.
